Description
A very rare, apparently unrecorded early 19th century Staffordshire pottery figure of a ‘Peg Leg’ sailor, standing on a square mound base with relief moulding.
Pearlware decorated with overglaze enamel colours.
*An old label attached to the underside suggests that the sublect was a servant of Admiral Lord Nelson, named as James Wall. (Enquiries have not found any record of a known servant of that name)
**It is interesting to note the simulation of facial hair, this is unusual on figures of this period and possibly indicates an attempt to depict a known character…

Condition : Old restoration to the neck only. Some flaking and wear to enamels.
