Description
A good quality pair of 19th century Derby bone china figures of William Shakespeare and John Milton, after the original statues by Peter Scheemakers.
Interestingly these figures were probably made for the German export market, Shakespeare’s scroll is written in German and both figures have Meissen style ‘crossed swords’ marks.
Circa : 1830
Height : 9½” (24cm)
Condition: SHAKESPEARE: Left forefinger missing, small chips to edge of base. MILTON: Break to left arm, left hand and scroll missing from top of pillar. Both figures have minor flaking to turquoise enamel, light wear to gilding and faint crazing to glaze, typical of the period.
