English Porcelain Sauce Tureen – Clobbered Style

Description

An interesting early 19th century English porcelain sauce tureen & cover, with three moulded lions heads and standing on three paw feet. The tureen is decorated in the so called *’Clobbered’ style with colourful flowers, butterflies and dragons.
Possibly Masons.
Date: circa 1820-30
Height : 7½” (19cm)
Diameter: 5¾” (14.5cm)
Condition : Small section of the rim missing, flat chip to edge of lid, some surface wear to gilding. No restoration.

* Many pieces of imported Chinese porcelain were upgraded by overpainting (Clobbering) in England, probably in Staffordshire (some pieces were overpainted in London in the 1760’s but that is a different category)
It is likely that the same factories of decorators were also painting English pieces in the same pallette & style.
