Early Staffordshire Pottery – Large Figure of Jupiter.

Description

A good quality early 19th century Staffordshire pottery large figure of Jupiter – (Roman) King of the Gods.
He stands on a simulated marble square base, with an Eagle at his side, he is holding a sceptre in his right hand.
Pearlware, decorated with overglaze enamel colours.
The figure is titled ‘JUPITER’ in black enamel to the underside of the base.
*Amusingly the figure initially had the incorrect title ‘HERCULES’ to the front of the base which was covered up with a sponged, simulated marble effect. (there must have been several of these figures, all produced in the same batch and all incorrectly titled, I have seen at least 3, possibly 4)
*See: Myrna Schkolne, ‘Staffordshire Pottery Figures 1780-1840, Vol 4, p156, pl 177.5
Date: circa 1810-20
Height : 11½” (29cm)
Condition : Some very good restoration to the eagle’s right wing, leg and the tip of Jupter’s sceptre.
