Staffordshire pottery figure of the actor John Liston as Sam Swipes.
Pearlware painted with overglaze enamel colours.
The front of the base inscribed : ‘No! Am I a Gentleman? / Upon your Soul tho’ Mother’
Probably by Enoch Wood.
Circa: 1825-30
Height : 6¼” (16cm)
Condition: Old restoration to neck, head & break through ankles.

*John Liston (1776-1846) was an English actor who excelled at performing comic roles. Sam Swipes was a character in ‘Exchange No Robbery’ by Theodore Hook. Sam Swipes was one of many characters he played.
